Digital Scenography

The overall goal of the project was to explore innovative use of interactive digital technologies in scenic art.

Its concrete objective was to develop new IT applications in scenic art through the production of a number of showcases based on the need for artistic effects in future productions. The present project focused on using and developing IT technology capable of supporting and playing together with live ballet and opera performances.

Its aim was furthermore to build up Danish competence in this area that should be of wider use to the Danish cultural scene and related areas.

Background

Formerly, scenography used wood, cardboard and other physical materials; in addition to this, effects created by means of lighting have played an increasingly larger role in the last century, while the use of digital scenography has remained a relatively unexplored area. Up till now, interactive scenography and 3D have only been used to a limited extent.

Dichterliebe

In cooperation with the Danish National Opera, CAVI digitally produced scenography for the production of “Dichterliebe” (1840), the song cycles by Robert Schumann.

Opera with stereoscopic interactive scenography

In cooperation with the Danish National Opera, CAVI produced and showed two showcases with the singers Jesper Brun-Jensen and Jens Krogsgaard performing in the 3D panorama in CAVI.

Motion Capture used in ballet

In cooperation with the Peter Schaufuss Ballet, CAVI developed a showcase within the field of ballet based on a number of experiments in using motion capture equipment in which particular attention has been paid to various ways of using particle systems controlled by the dancer’s movements.
