Aarhus by Light

Concert Hall Aarhus was the setting for an interactive piece that invites the citizens of the city to be part of a shared experience – Aarhus by Light. The interactive facade consists of 180 m2 LED displays. The displays are not in the shape of a giant rectangular TV; rather they form an organic shape that becomes part of the architecture.

The main purpose of Aarhus by Light is to develop interactive media facades as part of inner and outer architectural surfaces. A specific aim is to develop new concepts for interactive media facades in the domains of communications, branding, company and product presentation, entertainment, and digital arts. The project contributes to the development of the large-scale graphics, video and animations. The concepts will take the shape of built prototypes or visualizations.

Technology

The tracking and animation software has been programmed from the ground up for the occasion by CAVI in C++. MaxMSP/Jitter was used extensively during prototyping of interaction and tracking.

The character animation is custom made by Wall of Pixels and The Animation Workshop in Flash. The skyline was made by CAVI in Flash. All animations were eventually processed and converted into bitmaps.
