Outline:

In autumn 2005 Danish national television (DR2) engaged a series of architect firms in redesigning eight larger Danish public spaces. The TV programmes showed a condensed version of 24 hours of intensively work, where two firms had to compete against each other trying to design and illustrate the best ideas. Hereby the programmes demonstrated different ways of working and aspects of design methods and results.

One of the firms was Kollision, who was asked to use the 3D facilities in CAVI in their work proces. During their 24 hours of work Kollision used both the Virtual Studio and the 3D panorama. Where the Virtual Studio was used to create a virtual scale model of the results that then could be inspected and recorded, and the 3D panorama was used to dynamically design and evaluate in immersive 3D.

Kollision was given the large harbor areas named Kemira in Fredericia. The proposal resulted in a strategy for the site that basically can be split up in three principles for interventions, all aiming for a new and multifarious integrated part of Fredericia.

The first intervention was a series of slices to be cut through the industrial buildings and partly the ground, to literally open up the area and connect the seaside with the old inner city. The second intervention was about sewing seeds for new ‘green’ and cultural activities to arise, by simply randomly spreading fifty small pavilion-like units that could facilitate different activities in the area. Finally a new Multimedia Library was proposed as a concrete manifestation of the transformation of the areas.
